Is there any adult in America who has not heard of Madison Square Garden? Probably not! Madison Square Garden is the epitome of entertainment venues. All entertainers aspire to perform at “The Garden” as the ultimate proof of their success. It is the dream for boxers, basketball players, ice hockey teams, and many other members of professional sports to appear here.
The first Madison Square Garden was constructed in 1879. The current “Garden,” built in 1968, is actually the fourth building to bear this noble name, although it is no longer located in Madison Square. 130 years of history has provided it with a fascinating background. It's no wonder it continues to draw political conventions, music concerts, and the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus to continue to hold their major events here. In addition, Madison Square Garden also contains a theater, two restaurants, and an Expo Center, which is home to various trade shows, conferences, dog and cat shows, etc.
Touted as the busiest arena in the United States, this great edifice will be renovated during the next few years to the tune of $500 billion. This major undertaking will most likely lock in its status as a New York City landmark. Plans include two more restaurants, additional and more convenient concession stands, along with more and better restroom facilities. Better seating and added suites on various levels in the arena will provide an improved sightline for sports events. It is expected that the renovations, beginning in 2009, will be completed in time for the opening of the 2011-12 season.
A refurbished Madison Square Garden with views of the Big Apple will certainly remain on the average tourist’s list of places to visit.
