The New York Yankees have the most popular baseball stadium ever. The Yankees have been a very good team for years; they have won the World Series nine times since 1927 with the most recent being in 1999. Yankee Stadium has many popular nicknames, one of which is "The House That Ruth Built." Babe Ruth was one of the Yankees' best players and it all started when Yankee Stadium had opened in 1923. The nickname was chosen because Babe Ruth is known as an icon of both of the team and the stadium.
During all these years, Yankee Stadium has been used for many other events and other New York sports teams. The stadium held about 58,000 fans and as the years passed by, the fans came in larger amounts to see the games. By the 1950’s, the stadium would often pull in more than 80,000 fans to its games.
The Yankees are currently having another stadium built with an opening scheduled for 2009. The new stadium will be a 1.3 billion dollar stadium in the parkland, which is right across the street from the old Yankee stadium. They will not demolish the entire old stadium, but whatever they do get rid of is going to be used as part of the parkland.
Renovations have been made on several occasions throughout the years, but it was time for something new. The last renovations took place between 1974 and 1975. In 1976, the stadium reopened to host many more New York Yankee baseball games. Come September 21st, the Yankees are expected to play their last baseball game at the Yankee Stadium, but the legacy of the ballpark is sure to live on for years to come.
