Statue of Liberty

The Statue of Liberty was given to the United States by France in 1886. It is located in New York. It welcomes immigrants, visitors from other countries, and it also welcomes back Americans who have left the States.

The statue is of a woman with a torch, on top of a pedestal. She is 151 feet tall, and 305 feet tall including the pedestal. She represents liberty, and freedom.  There are also other representations on the statue of liberty, for example the 25 windows on the crown represent the gemstones found on earth. Also the seven rays on the crown represent the seven seas, and seven continents of earth. The statue of Liberty started because of the Revolutionary war. The Americans and the British were fighting in the this war. France came and helped the Americans with money, ships, and supplies. The two nations developed a bond, a love of liberty.

A hundred years later the people of France wanted to give America a monument to show that these two nations are both for liberty, and independence.

Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi sculpted the Statue of Liberty, he drew up many different designs that took him over ten years to complete. When it was time to build it, they first started out with a wooden frame, and then nailed copper sheets to it. An iron structure then took place of the wood frame.  After it was completed Bartholdi personally traveled to the States to pick New York Harbor as her place to stay.
