Staten Island is sometimes referred to as “The Forgotten Borough” by some residents who feel it is neglected by city government. It is still a big part of New York City and is one of five boroughs within the city's government. Staten Island is the least populated with under a half million people but is also the largest when it comes to land mass. The Island is still a beautiful place to visit when in New York City.
Staten Island is connected to the rest of the world by three different bridges allowing access to Brooklyn and New Jersey. It has the conveniences of the rapid transit railway and the city’s bus route. One of the big attractions for visitors is to take the ferry that goes between the island and Manhattan, which allows for viewing of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and Manhattan. While visiting Staten Island, you should consider strolling along the 2.5 mile F.D.R. Boardwalk. It is a relaxing walk, as you can take in the beautiful sites along the forth world largest boardwalk.
Staten Island is full of rich culture and history. You can visit the original seat of the Richmond County Government (which was active in the 1700’s), and read about the booming town of Richmond. In 1898, the island was taken over by the New York City Government as one of its boroughs. Another great attraction is the Staten Island Zoo which features an internationally acclaimed reptile collection. In these exhibits are some of the rarest reptiles in the world, and they're great for the entire family to enjoy. Another historical site to see is one of the oldest military sites in the United States, Fort Wadsworth. It is tucked underneath the Verrazano Bridge in a strategic position in order to protect the entrance of the New York Harbor, which it has done for almost 200 years. There is so much to see and do at Staten Island, you will not want to miss the opportunity.
