The Lincoln Center is for the performing arts society. It is a 16.3 acre complex that resides twelve art organizations. John D. Rockefeller III built the Lincoln Center in the late 1950s. He was its inaugural first president and later became chairman in 1961. He raised more than $92.3 million to help build the luxurious complex. The first building was completed and occupied in 1962. This structure is located between 60th and 66th Street on the upper west side of Manhattan. It was the first primary cultural institution in America.
In 2004 the center made an addition of the Jazz culture. In 2006 the center launched construction on a major redevelopment plan that modernized, restored and opened up in 2009 for its 50th anniversary. The Performing Arts, Inc. serves as the national leader in community relations, arts and education. Four hundred events are held annually that include festivals, Outdoor Midsummer Night Swing, Mozart Festival and The Emmy Award-Winning Live.
The following facilities are part of the complex: Walter Reads, Mitzi E. Newhouse, Vivian Beaumont, the New York State Theater, Alice Tully and Avery Fisher Halls. The most popular theater the Metropolitan Opera House was opened on September 7, 1982.
