The New York Knicks are one of the most storied franchises in professional sports. The pressure that comes along with being a New York team has often brought much criticism, as the city loves you when you win and hates you when you lose. The team has endured many disappointing seasons, but has also enjoyed some successful seasons as well.
The New York Knicks, short for Knickerbockers, play in the Eastern Conference of the NBA, and are one of the only teams still playing in its original city. The teams first few years of existence were successful years as they were repeatedly playoff contenders, but by 1960 they fell upon hard times. The team’s future was brightened with the addition of such players as Willis Reed and Walt Frazier, as the pair help lead the franchise to its only championship seasons in 1970 and 73. Once Willis Reed announced his retirement, the team enjoyed minimal success until the addition of Patrick Ewing in the mid-80’s. The addition of Patrick Ewing as well as some other key players helped lead the team to the Finals following the 93-94 season, where they lost to the Houston Rockets. Patrick Ewing helped lead the team to one more Finals appearance, before being traded following the 2000 season. The years following up until today have been filled with many disappointing seasons, as the team has struggled to regain the successes of the past years.
With the hiring of Mike D’Antoni from the Suns, the Knicks are hoping to once again be a competitor in the Eastern Conference. They are hoping the exciting style of play brought by D’Antoni will help bring success and once again make the city proud to be Knickerbockers.
