Broadway Theatre - Something for Everyone

The Broadway theatre district in Manhattan is one of the main draws for both tourists and locals alike in New York City. The performances represent the highest level of talent, and are renowned the world over. Ticket sales for Broadway shows add up to over $1.5 billion a year. The standard run is 8 shows a week, for as long as a show is turning a profit. The most successful shows can also go out on tour, playing in cities all over the U.S. The Tony Awards are the most prestigious award given to honor Broadway performances.

Historically, musicals have been more successful than non-musicals. The record for the longest running Broadway show is held by Phantom of the Opera, which has been playing since 1988. There are many other shows currently playing on Broadway that also are enjoying exceptionally long runs such as Rent, Chicago, The Lion King, Hairspray, or Wicked. Many famous actors and actresses are performing on Broadway now, such as Patrick Stewart in Macbeth and Patti LuPone in Gypsy.

Broadway offers a dazzling selection of shows to choose from. Current offerings include musicals such as Cry-Baby or Xanadu, both of which were nominated for Tony Awards in the "best musical" category. If you are in the mood for a revival of an older musical, you could choose from Grease, South Pacific, or Gypsy (which were also nominated for Tony Awards in 2008). If you aren’t in the mood for music, try Tony-nominated Boeing-Boeing for a light evening or Hamlet for a more somber and darker show. Whether you are looking for family entertainment or a more adult evening, Broadway is sure to give you an unforgettable experience.
