Rockefeller Center

Rockefeller Center in New York City was originally constructed with ten buildings on a twelve acre site. Construction of the Rockefeller Center began in 1931. The center was name after John D. Rockefeller Jr., who originally planned to build an Opera house. The crash of the stock market changed his mind. After the 1929 stock market crash he had many thoughts on what to do with his leased land. He thought about leaving the project after financial backup dropped out. In the end he decided the finance the project himself.

The evidence of his decision stands clear to everyone today. One of the first buildings to be completed in the Rockefeller Center was the Radio City Music Hall, which was completed in December of 1932. The building was named to interact with the neighboring buildings named “Radio City.” The building’s planning took three architectural firms to complete and eventually became a big tourist destination. The Radio City Music Hall became a city landmark for its interior in 1978.

One of Rockefeller Center’s biggest kept secrets is it's underground shopping. The area takes up most of the same area as the ground level center. It has everything from retail shops to fine dining and fast food. The underground system is probably the best way to take in bad weather. If you know your way through the underground system well enough you can find your way to several subway lines. Back on the street level Garden Park can be enjoyed by all, from there you can stroll from Garden Park to various other parks in the area. Rockefeller Center also has two hundred flagpoles. They mostly display the different countries of the United Nations.
