The brokers are individuals who are hired by investment firms to participate in the stock exchange for them. Playing the stock refers to the brokers walking around buying, trading and selling stock as they see fit, to satisfy the investing firms. This activity takes place everyday excluding weekends and most holidays.
The New York Stock Exchange functions by individuals buying stocks into companies. If the company grows and becomes successful the more that people will generally purchase the stock. The more people purchase the stock the more the stock price will increase. However, if people decline in purchasing the stock then the price of the stock will decrease. The amount of the stock that is purchased determines the amount of the company that an individual owns. This could be beneficial or detrimental for the buyer depending on the success of the company.
