FAO Schwarz in New York City

F.A.O Schwarz is one of the biggest and best in the nation, if not the world. The store was established in 1862 by a German immigrant who originally called the company Toy Bazaar. In 1931, the location was moved to 58th street and Fifth Avenue. In 1963 it was sold to Parent’s Magazine. In 1986, the store was moved to the old General Motors Building where it still resides today.

In 1996, FAO Schwarz opened up a candy division called F.A.O. Schweetz. They survived a bankruptcy in 2001 and opened up a website to draw in the vast market of online shoppers. D.E. Shaw and Company took over in 2004 and reopened the New York and Las Vegas stores in the same year. In 2007, the vast toy empire acquired a children’s clothing company called Best & Company. The 5th Avenue New York City location is the most popular store and is the flagship for the entire chain.

F.A.O. Schwarz has been featured in movies and the floor piano is a popular attraction. Many visitors and their children come from miles around to visit the store in New York City and spend in the toy wonderland that has become so famous. The F.A.O. Schwarz Bear still sits in front of the flagship store in New York City bidding welcome to young and old to come and visit that store and stay and play. Through the years F.A.O. Schwarz has been the most unique and most visited in the United States. With their one of a kind stuffed animals and fun play atmosphere it is not hard to see why this is true.
