The New York Rangers are a hockey team based in New York City that plays in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). The team is owned and operated by Madison Square Gardens prominently located in Manhattan.nThe New York Rangers were founded at Madison Square Gardens for the 1926 season. MSG president G.L. “Tex” Rickard selected Conn Smythe from the University of Toronto to put the first team together. The origin of the team name came about when local sportswriters referred to the players as “Tex’s Rangers.”
Amazingly the New York Rangers won the coveted Stanley Cup in 1928, their 2nd season of existence, by defeating the Montreal Maroons. A feat never repeated by another hockey team to this day. The New York Rangers claimed another 3 Stanley Cups, the latest victory in the 1993-1994 season. Beginning in 1967, the New York Rangers made the playoffs in nine consecutive seasons, another record breaker.
One of the greatest all time hockey players, Wayne Gretzky ,wearing jersey #99, spent his 20 year hockey career with the New York Rangers. On April 18, 1999, Gretzky skated at the Madison Square Gardens to culminate his career and soon enter into the NHL Hall of Fame.
The New York Rangers entered into its 80th season this year under the leadership of Glen Sather. Sather enjoyed a 24 year career with the Edmonton Oilers, guiding them to 5 Stanley Cup championships. The New York Rangers are currently in 2nd place with 28 wins and 16 losses, only 1 loss behind the New Jersey Devils.
