Movies Filmed In New York City

In 1908, "The Thieving Hand" was the first film of record filmed in New York City. It was a silent film shot on location in Flatbush, Brooklyn, New York City. In 1927, "The Jazz Singer," starring Al Jolson, was the first feature-length movie with dialogue.

In 1933, "King Kong" was introduced to viewers, starring Fay Wray, who was loved by a gorilla, and Robert Armstrong, the hero. The monster film is best known for the Empire State Building finale. In the 1940s the true story of Lou Gehrig and his fight against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis disease inspired viewers. The disease has been referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

The 1950s and Alfred Hitchcock gave viewers a suspenseful and tender relationship between James Stewart and Grace Kelly in "Rear Window." The role of Raymond Massey brought four Oscar nominations. In 1969, "Midnight Cowboy," starring Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight, combined two down-on-their-luck souls that meet and befriend each other. The film won three Academy Awards.

"The Godfather," written by Mario Puzo and its two sequels confirmed the Corleone family. Stars like Marlon Brando, Robert Duvall, Al Pacino, Diane Keaton and James Caan makeup the cast. A remake of "The Jazz Singer," in the 80s, starring Neil Diamond and Lucie Arnez, was considered a flop. However, it grossed more than "Raging Bull," "The Elephant Man" and "American Gigolo."

"Sleepless in Seattle" starred Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. This love story takes the entire movie to happen, but with splendid results, all because of a ten-year-old boy. In 2002, a comedy-drama of the life of Frank Abagnale Jr. kept the audience riveted to their seats. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks, this con-man playboy appears to be always one step ahead of the law in "Catch Me If You Can."
