The Square

When you think of squares, you may think of arithmetic. However, there is more to the square than just arithmetic. Squares can be places too, like Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Like many other famous places, Madison Square Garden has endured many trials and tribulations. Madison Square Garden has been rebuilt a total of four times. A park, where the first two gardens were located on Madison Avenue at 26th Street, is how Madison Square Gardens got its name and was the location of the first Madison Square Garden.

The second Madison Square Garden was designed by Stanford White. It was located in the same place as the original Madison Square Garden and boasted grandiose architecture.

The third Madison Square was built by boxing promoter Tex Rickard and was torn down. It was located on 50th Street and 8th Avenue. Tex Rickard’s Madison Square is what gave Madison Square Garden its claim to fame because it was a popular venue for boxing, the Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey Circus and professional hockey.

The next Madison Square Garden was built in Long Island City and was an open air arena. It, too, was torn down after World War II in order to build a U.S. Army Mail depot.

The Madison Square Garden of today sits on the very same land that the Pennsylvania Station once stood on. It is now the world’s most famous and busiest arena. It houses the best concerts and family events in the tri-state area of New York. Not only does Madison Square Garden house the best concerts and family events, it is also home to the New York Knicks, New York Rangers and New York Liberty.
