New York's Meatpacking District

The official name for the Meatpacking District in New York City is the Gansevoort Market, originally located from the Hudson River as far as Hudson Street, and now extending as far as north as West 16 Street and beyond Hudson Street to the east.

Formerly, there were 250 slaughter houses located in this part of Manhattan, but in recent years this section of the city has become an ultra trendy place where upscale hotels, restaurants and shops are located. Jeffrey, a boutique for fashionable clothes, is setting the trends for both men and women. Other shops located here are Diane von Furstenberg, Theory, Shelley Steffee, among others. Many fashion designers are also located here, such as Charles Nola, Carlos Miele, who specializes in Brazilian hand work, Buckler, who is famous for men's wear, and Alexander McQueen, famous for hand bags and shoes. Shopping for fashionable clothing is great here.

A wide selection of excellent restaurants attracts many visitors to this district of Manhattan. If you like French cuisine, try Pastis. There are also high end restaurants specializing in Japanese, Mexican, Italian, and Chinese food. Everything that a visitor to New York City could desire to eat can be found in this part of the Big Apple.

If you want to stay for a few days, the posh Gansevoort Hotel is a good choice. This contemporary fourteen floor hotel, with 187 rooms, is ultra trendy and has a rooftop garden that is built for enjoyment and to provide spectacular views. With many restaurants, shops and boutiques, museums, bars and clubs in the neighborhood, the Gansevoort is an excellent place to stay to enjoy the attractions of the Meatpacking District.
